Comm Talks With Cally – Episode 2: College Story Podcast-First Semester Journey

In this episode of Comm Talks With Cally, I reflect on the transformative experience of navigating my first semester of college. The assignment encouraged us to review our initial months in this new chapter, identifying what went well, what challenges we faced, and the lessons learned along the way. It provided an opportunity to share personal insights and connect with others experiencing similar transitions.

The podcast focuses on three key themes: building community through athletics, stepping outside my comfort zone, and personal growth in relationships. Coming from a family deeply rooted in sports, joining the college tennis team was a way to maintain familiarity while carving out a new space for myself. Sharing my journey of finding camaraderie and belonging on the team highlights the importance of community in adapting to change. Another pivotal theme is the courage to embrace the unfamiliar. My acting class was an unexpected but rewarding challenge that pushed me to explore creative expression and confidence. This experience encouraged me to take on roles like assistant director for an interview project and get involved in local initiatives, including the Community News Fellowship Program. Lastly, I explored how personal relationships evolved during this period. Friendships with new roommates provided crucial support, while my bonds with family back home—especially my sister—changed in meaningful ways. These reflections offer a raw and relatable glimpse into the emotional complexities of leaving home.

The goal of this project was to allow me space to reflect on my growth and share a story that could inspire others. It captures the highs and lows of transition, celebrates personal resilience, and emphasizes the value of embracing both challenges and opportunities. My podcast highlights how even a short time can lead to significant growth and lasting connections.
