WRT 211: Creative Writing: Poetry
UNE Course Description: This course provides students the opportunity to practice writing poetry. Through attention to the elements of craft in these creative forms and a range of prompts, students learn to develop free and formal verse that explores new possibilities for expression. Poetry assignments will follow prompts to create, for instance, poems drawn from their own lives, litanies, and pantoums. Attention to word choice, imagery, metaphor, and writing strong lines will be practiced across the genre. Students work toward creating and revising an original body of writings that, together, reveal an emergent creative voice. This course is a program elective for the English major and minor, the Writing minor, and the Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities major. This course also meets the Creative Arts Experience requirement in the Core Curriculum. 3.000 Credit hours.
Personal Course Description: This course was a fully discussion-based, collaborative space where we explored poetry by reading, analyzing, and talking through a wide range of poems together. In class, we shared what we liked, what confused us, what emotions a poem brought out, and what messages we thought the poet might be trying to convey. Every conversation was positive, supportive, and focused on understanding poetry on a deeper level. We also wrote our own poems throughout the semester. We submitted them anonymously, and the class would read and discuss them with the same respect and encouragement we brought to published works. It created a safe, creative environment where we could take risks, experiment with new styles, and grow as writers. Along with our readings and workshops, we completed fun creative projects, like designing mini poetry books and making collage poems, which pushed us to think about poetry in visual and experimental ways. Overall, this course strengthened my writing, boosted my confidence, and helped me appreciate poetry as both an art form and a way of expressing myself
