Biddeford Mills Museum: Preserving the Past for the Future

Since 2012, the Biddeford Mills Museum has been preserving and preparing exhibits for public access. PHOTO BY CALLY GUDROE Originally established in 2012, the Biddeford Mills Museum was born out of an effort to preserve the rich history of the local textile industry. When WestPoint Pepperell moved its operations south, a vast collection of equipment and records was left behind. Recognizing the historical significance of these artifacts, the property owner assembled a team of 20 former mill employees to curate a collection that would eventually become the foundation of the museum. After years of behind-the-scenes work, the museum officially opened to the public in 2019. The museum recently relocated in…

College Story Podcast – Rough Cut

In this rough cut, I have compiled my narration, audio journals, and music. Audio Track 1 consists of my weekly audio journal entries, Track 2 has my narration, and Track 3 contains my music. Overall, I am liking the themes and basis of my podcast, however there are technical issues to be worked out. The audio levels are all over the place at times and my fade in and outs of my music could be a little better. I will need to run through the audio journals one more time to make sure that all the awkward pauses and “ums'” are taken out, though it shouldn’t take too long. Other…

LOCAL ELEMENTARY CROSS-COUNTRY PROGRAM IS A WINNER

Sat. Oct. 12, 2024 In 2018, public elementary schools in Biddeford, Saco, and Dayton along with St. James in Biddeford launched a low-cost Cross-Country program for third, fourth, and fifth-graders, offering not only physical competition but also valuable lessons in personal goal-setting. The leader pushing for this program back in 2018 was Jeremy Ray, superintendent of schools in all three school districts. Inspired by seeing similar programs Down East, Ray and others decided to bring this opportunity to their local community, and it has since grown into a successful program. Despite initial challenges, like COVID affecting participation, the program now thrives with strong community support and a partnership with local…

    Northern Lights – Campus Atmosphere

Beyond Class Activity: Other On the 10th of October, 2024, the Northern Lights made their appearance in the skies above campus. At 7:31pm myself and my friends ran to the docks along with many other individuals to take photos and admire them away from the campus’s light pollution. It was an atmosphere of awe and wonderment as about 100 people and I sat and gazed at the red, green and purple hues illuminating the night sky. The northern lights are extremely special to me as back home, in the quiet, dark, and secluded environment that surrounds my house, has always been the perfect place to see the Northern Lights. So…

    Community News Fellow

Beyond Class Activity: Extracurricular At the beginning of the year I joined the Community News Fellow Program, where students are paired with a local news outlets to help cover stories and support local news. I paired up with Saco Bay News and began my first story at the end of September. It was about the local elementary cross-country program at the Dayton, Biddeford, and Saco elementary schools. I had an amazing time taking photos and being a part of the program’s practices and meets. The children sported bright smiles the entire time and there was barely any conflict between teammates, which was great to see. When I talked to the…

    College Story Podcast: Part I

Key Themes: Week 2 (Sep. 1st – 7th): “I started Club Tennis and Soccer this week. I really missed each of those sports. Especially Tennis. I made a new friend named Addie. She is just as involved and in love with tennis as I am, and happens to share the same name as my best friend/sister, so it’s not a hard name to remember. We had practice from 4 to 6, and then stayed an extra hour afterwards to play around by ourselves and our coach Joal. He’s on the marketing team here and UNE. Joal said that we would both probably be a part of the traveling team because…

    2-1-Q Chapter 11

LIL 120 A – Fall 2024 Professor Cripps 2 – Offer 2 Specific Details from the chapter. For each ID/quote add 3-8 sentences of your own explanation. Page 250-251: “Here is an attempt from the seventeenth century…cold, sterile, chaotic world of meaningless atoms.” During this time in history there was a Protestant assault of the Catholic Church. Greenblatt suggests that this assault was not on the basis of atomism, but the resurgence of ancient materialism. The Catholic Counter-Reformation was an act of purgation of abuses and ambiguities that allowed a path for the Protestant Revolt. Here is where we find the emergence of Jesuits, who are made to sit and…
